f(x) is a five member South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment in 2009. The name is a play on the mathematical notation for function, with “f” signifying “flower” and “x” representing the female’s double X chromosome. The group made their debut on September 1, 2009 with release of a digital single “La Cha Ta” (stylized as “LA chA TA”). The quintet consists of Victoria, Amber, Luna, Sulli and Krystal.
Krystal Jung was first spotted by SM Entertainment in 2000, which earned her a small role in a short segment of Shinhwa’s “Wedding March” music video. Sulli Choi first debuted as a child actress in 2005 when she was selected to play young Princess Sun-hwa in the SBS television drama, The Ballad of Seo-dong. In 2006, SM Entertainment recruited Luna after seeing her performing on SBS’s television program, “Truth Game”.In September 2007, SM Entertainment recruited Victoria Song. A month later, Amber was cast from an audition in Los Angeles, California.
Song Qian, born February 2, 1987, better known as Victoria Song or mononymously as Victoria, is a Chinese pop singer and model active in South Korea. She was first introduced as an upcoming artist from SM Entertainment and modeled for several Korean brands, such as Spris, Anycall, and Samsung in early 2008. In August 2009, she was introduced as the leader of quintet dance group, f(x).
Victoria was born in Qingdao, Shandong. After her high school graduation, she was accepted to the prestigious Beijing Dance Academy and majored in Chinese ethnic dance. Victoria’s outward appearance and skilled dancing caught the eyes of a talent agent during a dance competition that was held in Beijing in September 2007, and she was recommended to audition for SM Entertainment. She passed the auditions that same month and began preparing for her modeling career in South Korea. In April 2008, Victoria was signed to model for Samsung in a music video with Korean actor-singer Rain.
She was a member of G7 in Invincible Youth replacing the old member Sunny, Yuri from Girls’ Generation and 4Minute HyunA. She has guest-starred on the Korean comedy show, Running Man. On June 1, 2010, Victoria was announced to be an additional cast member to We Got Married, pairing up with Nichkhun Horvejkul of 2PM.
Amber Liu, born on Sptember 18, 1992, is better known mononymously as Amber, is a Chinese-American member of SM Entertainment’s quintet pop girl group f(x). Aside from her rapping skills, she is also known as the girl with a boyish image, different from the usual sweet and girly image of other Korean girl groups.
Amber was cast from SM Entertainment’s Los Angeles global audition in 2008. After almost two years of training, she debuted under the new girl group f(x) in September 2009, labeled as “Asia’s Pop Dance Group”.
Label mate Girls’ Generation had their first concert Into The New World on December 19 and 20, 2009 in Seoul. One of its members, Yuri, performed a cover of Ciara’s song “1, 2 step” and featured Amber as a rapper and dancer. On June 2010, SM Entertainment released Taiwanese singer and actor Danson Tang’s new music video called “I’m Back”,which features Amber doing the rap part in both English and Korean.
Aside from featured songs, Amber also worked with fellow group mates Luna and Krystal for the OST of KBS drama God of Study, in a song called “Spread Its Wings”.
Park Sunyoung (박선영), better known mononymously as Luna (루나(1993-08-1), born on August 12, 1993, is a South Korean singer, dancer and model. She is most famous as being part of a quintet pop girl band, f(x) under the label of SM Entertainment in South Korea and Avex Trax in Japan.
Luna was born in Seoul, South Korea. Luna has a identical and biological twin sister.
In 2006, SM Entertainment, an entertainment agency based in South Korea, recruited Luna after seeing her performing on a SBS’s television program, “Truth Game”. After training for more than three years, she became a member of a quintent pop idol girl group, f(x), under the label of her agency.
In October 2010, Luna was one of the twenty idols from different South Korean groups that recorded the song, “Let’s Go”, for the purpose of increasing public participation in 2010 G-20 Seoul summit. She provided vocals along with label-mates Sungmin, Seohyun and Jonghyun.
Luna debuted in a musical as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.
Starting from April 15, Luna will be hosting a music program called The Show from MTV Korea along with Secret’s Hyosung.
Choi JinRi (born March 29, 1994), known mononymously as Sulli, is a Korean actress and singer. She debuted as a child actress in 2005. She is currently a member of the Korean quintet girl group f(x), formed by SM Entertainment in 2009.
Sulli began acting professionally at the age of 11, when she was selected to play young Princess Sun-hwa in the SBS television drama, The Ballad of Seo-dong.A few months later, she made a cameo appearance in Love Needs a Miracle, another SBS television drama. In 2006, she made a small supporting appearance as the childhood crush of TVXQ’s Micky in the theatrical drama Vacation. Sulli later landed a small role in Punch Lady and The Flower Girl is Here (2007) and also BABO (2008).
She is currently co-hosting the music show Inkigayo with 2AM’s JoKwon, B2ST’s Kikwang and IU.
Krystal Jung (Jung SooJung, 정수정) was born on October 24, 1994, is better known mononymously as Krystal, is an American singer, dancer, actress, and model of Korean descent. She was born in San Francisco, and is fluent in both Korean and English. Discovered by SM Entertainment in 2000, she began filming for commercials and music videos by 2002. She is currently a member of the Korean quintet girl group f(x), formed by SM Entertainment in 2009.
During a family trip to South Korea in early 2000 when Krystal was five, she was spotted by talent agency SM Entertainment, which earned her a cameo appearance in Shinhwa’s “Wedding March” music video. The agency saw potential in Krystal and offered her singing and dancing lessons, opting to professionally train her in a singing career. However, the offer was turned down by her parents, reasoning that Krystal was too young. Instead, her parents allowed her older sister Jessica Jung to join the agency, who debuted as a member of girl group Girls’ Generation in August 2007.
In 2002, Krystal began appearing in television commercials. She first appeared in a Lotte commercial with Korean actress Han Ga-in. In 2006, her parents allowed her to join SM Entertainment, and the agency enrolled her in dance classes, including hip hop and jazz.
In 2010, Krystal appeared in Let’s Go Dream Team 2, where she broke a high jump record set on the show 10 years ago. She also set another record, jumping 1.95m in a high jump event. In 2010, She starred a minor role in TV sitcom More Charming by the Day.
She’s currently participating in the ice skating program “Kiss & Cry”.
