Kara (카라, often stylized as KARA) is a K-pop girl group from South Korea signed with DSP Media (DSP). The band name Kara comes from the Greek Word “chara” (χαρά, lit. “joy”), which the group interpreted to mean “sweet melody”.
Kara started as a four-member group and debuted with their first album The First Blooming in 2007. In 2008, Kim Sunghee departed the group due to parental pressure, and two members were brought in; as such, the group consists of five members: Park Gyuri, Han Seung-yeon, Goo Hara, Nicole Jung and Kang Jiyoung. The five-member band achieved their first number one song with “Honey”.
Kara has won various awards, including the Best Dance Award at the M.net Asian Music Awards and Best Female Singer at the 16th Korean Entertainment Arts Awards.
The group eventually made their debut in Japan on 2010. By the end of that year, Kara was dubbed as Japan’s #1 Rookie Artist of 2010 by Oricon and also received the New Artist Of The Year Award (International) from the Japan Gold Disc Awards. The group also released their first Japanese album, Girl’s Talk which was eventually certified as Platinum by the RIAJ.
Their official fanclub is Kamilia, a combination of KARA and familia (family). Their official balloon color is pearl peach.
Park GyuRi (박규리, born on May 21, 1988 in Seoul) is a South Korean singer, known for being the leader of girl group Kara, formed by DSP Entertainment in 2007.
Prior to her singing career, she was a child actress. Her first appearance was on Today is a Nice Day in 1995 where she played the girlfriend of Kang Ho Dong’s brother. She later appeared as the teenage version of Kim Jung Eun’s character in Ladies of the Palace in 2001.
Upon Nicole’s segment ending on Star Golden Bell, she was appointed as a permanent guest; she was planned to have her own segment on the show, but the producers did not follow through.
She featured in a duet titled “Day After” with Hong Kyung Min on his 10th album Special Edition, released on February 4, 2010.
On April 21, 2010, it was announced that Park would take over the position of DJ alongside Shindong on “ShimShimTapa” after Kim Shinyoung left. Their first broadcast aired on May 6, 2010.
Gyuri was the voice of “Kate” in the Korean dubbed version of Alpha and Omega, released in February 2011.
Han SeungYeon (한승연; born on July 24, 1988 in Seoul) is a South Korean singer, known for being a member of girl group Kara, formed by DSP Entertainment in 2007.
She left Korea to study at Tenafly High School in the United States. However, she left high school mid-course in order to pursue a singing career. After returning to Korea, she debuted as a singer on March 29, 2007, as a member of Kara along with Park Gyuri, Nicole and Kim Sunghee.
Han Seungyeon debuted as a child actress in a cameo role in Star in My Heart.
Due to Kara’s debut album “The First Blooming” being relatively unsuccessful, Seungyeon went on to participate in many variety shows from 2007 to early 2009 in order to keep Kara recognizable to the public.
From October to December 2008, she was part of the cast of MBC reality show Family Needed, where a group of celebrities would live life as a family, consisting of a father, mother, son and daughter. She also became part of MBC’s entertainment news show Section TV as a “pop columnist”, debuting on November 21, 2008. She also made a guest appearance on rapper Nassun’s single “Nolleowa”
which was released in March 2009, and appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Welcome to my House, releasing her first solo song “Miracle”.
She became part of the “Dream Team Girl Group” for Samsung’s Anycall called “4 Tomorrow”. Their first digital single “BeatBeat Tomorrow” was released on October 6, 2009, and the official music video was released on October 12.
Goo HaRa (구하라) was born on January 13, 1991. She is a South Korean singer, known for being a member of girl group Kara formed by DSP Entertainment in 2007.
Before debuting, she participated in the SM’s youth appearance tournament in 2005. In 2007, she auditioned for JYP, however, she lost the runoff.
She was also an online shopping mall model, having been scouted after her photos were uploaded onto DSP’s homepage. Thus, Goo Hara became a member of Kara. Currently is attending at Sungshin Women’s University but she postponed going to university in order to concentrate on her career, but is currently now attending according with recent news.
In late 2008, she appeared along with the other Kara members in an episode of MBC sitcom That Person is Coming, having the most prominent role as a female gang leader.
She joined MBC’s Hunters, along with SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong, Jung Yong Hwa, Lee Hwi Jae, Shin Jung Hwan and two professional hunters to catch overpopulated wild boars that have become a dangerous threat to people and crops. The first episode aired on December 6, 2009. However, due to complaints about animal rights after the first episode, the show’s format was quickly changed to Eco House; Goo Hara does not appear in the new show.
In October 2009, she became a cast member in KBS 2TV reality show Invincible Youth.
Heo Youngji (허영지) was born on August 30, 1994. She’s a vocalist of the group KARA.
She joined the team after winning Kara Project, a program to find the newest member of the group after the departures of Nicole and Jiyoung.
In 2014, she became a cast member of the SBS’s reality show Roonmate 2.
- Kim SungHee (김성희)
She was born on May 17th, 1989. Sunghee was the lead vocalist. She left the group in 2008 in order to concentrate in her studies. Because of her departure Hara and Jiyoung were added to the group.
- Nicole Jung (정니콜)
She was born on October 7, 1991. Nicole was the rapper and vocalist of the group. She left the group in 2014 after not renewing her contract with DSP Media.
- Kang Jiyoung (강지영)
She was born on January 18, 1994. Jiyoung was the vocalist of the group. She left the group in 2014 after not renewing her contract with DSP Media.
